I. History

In 1968, Kent R. Palmer and his wife Dolores, owners of the Palmer Funeral Homes in North Liberty and Walkerton, sold their equity and moved to South Bend. Within the next six years, Kent acquired three funeral homes in St. Joseph County...The Orvis Funeral Home in South Bend, the Harden Funeral Home in Lakeville and the Hollis Funeral Home in River Park.

Kent sold the family business in 1995, to his sons, K. R. and Kerry Palmer. Then, in 1997, K. R. & Kerry purchased the Warner Funeral Home in Osceola. In 2002 they purchased the Guisinger Chapel Funeral Home & Southlawn Cemetery and then in 2009 purchased the Hickey Funeral Home in Granger. In 2012 they acquired the Manuel Funeral Home is North Liberty,IN and founded Palmer's Pet Services.

With the Palmer tradition of kindness, integrity, and family values, our business continues to grow by offering the same quality service from one generation to the next.

 

II. Biographies 

Kent R. and Dolores Palmer

Kent graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1958. He was a member of Lakeville United Methodist Church, North Liberty Masonic Lodge #266 F & AM, Shrine Club of South Bend, North Liberty OES #290, Past Patron, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Orak Temple AAONMS of Michigan City, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, White Shrine of Jerusalem #10, Rebekah Lodge, Avalon Grotto and BPO Elks, San Carlos Golf Club, Fort Myers, FL and 4-Lakes Country Club-Edwardsburg, MI.

He was also a member of Mercator Club and North Liberty Lion's Club. He had foresight and energy and a compassion for people. He served for 35 years in his profession never tiring of serving families. He leaves a wonderful legacy to his sons. Kent R. Palmer passed away on December 5th, 2006.

K. R. Palmer

K. R. is co-owner of the Palmer Funeral Homes, Southlawn Cemetery and Palmer Pet Services.  He has been part of the family business since 1984. He received his Associate Degree from Purdue University and Mortuary Science Degree from Mid-American College and finished his Bachelor Degree from Bethel College in 2012.  He is a parishioner at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mishawaka, a board member for the United Health Services of St. Joseph County and a member of the River Park Business Assoc.   He and his wife Elizabeth have three children Christian, Graham, & Meredith.

Kerry Palmer

Kerry has been active in the family business since 1992 after receiving a Bachelor’s Degree from Purdue University and Mortuary Science Degree from Worsham College of Mortuary Science. Kerry is a member of the Lakeville United Methodist Church, Lakeville Lions Club and Lakeville Masonic Lodge. He has three sons, Isaac, Lucas and Simon.

 

Tracy Faudree

Tracy has been with the Palmer Funeral Homes for 22 years.  He serves as an Advanced Planning Counselor as well as Director of Operations.  He is a lifelong resident of South Bend.  Married to Donna K. Faudree for 28 years.  He is a member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church where he serves on First Impressions and sings with the Chancel Choir.  He is a member and Organist of Lakeville Lodge # 353, F. & AM, Past Master and Organist of St. Joseph Lodge # 45, F. & AM, South Bend, and Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend.  In his spare time, Tracy and Donna enjoy traveling and gardening.

Rev. Greg Crump

Greg has worked for Palmer Funeral Homes since 2007 and received his Associates Degree in Mortuary Science in 2008. He graduated from Anderson University in 1981 with a degree in Christian Ministries and Sacred Music. He served congregations in Nappanee, IN; Norfolk, VA and most recently South Side Church of God, South Bend from 1993 – 2007. He and his wife, Elaine have two children, Kelly (Adam) Ottinger and Mike Crump. Greg is enjoying his new career, which allows him to continue to serve families in this community.

 
 

Donna Adkins

Donna joined the Palmer family in July of 2010. She attended Purdue University and graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary Science.  She is a member of the Moose Lodge #599 of Elkhart and St. Joseph County Homemakers Association-Penn Neighbors. Donna is currently Secretary-Treasurer of Northern Indiana Funeral Directors Association. She is a licensed funeral director in Indiana, Illinois and Michigan.  She and her family are members of Queen of Peace Church in Mishawaka.

 Rick Palmisano

Rick Palmisano

Rick joined the staff at Palmer Funeral Homes in April of 2012.  He began his career in funeral service at the age of fourteen.  He attended Andrews University and graduated from Southwestern Michigan College and Wayne State University.  In 1989, Rick became a Licensed Funeral Director in the states of Indiana and Michigan and in Arizona in 2003.  Rick resides in South Bend with his wife, Jamie and children.  Rick and his family attend the Buchanan Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Norman L. Bone

Norm became part of the Palmer Funeral Home Staff in April of 1999. In June of 2007 Norman retired after 37 years of serving our community  as a Funeral Director. He retired to spend more time with his wife Caroline of 37 years, his daughter and son–in-law, Beth and Jay and granddaughters Katelyn and Lauren.

Although he has retired, Norman still responds when called upon.

Tom Hickey, III

Tom is a 1974 graduate of John Adams High school and Miami-Dade College, Miami, Florida with a Associate in Science degree in Mortuary Science. He is a licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer.  Tom joined the Palmer Funeral Home after the acquisition of the Hickey Funeral Home in September 2009, which served the Michiana area over 72 years.  Tom is married with 3 children, a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and an active member in Roseland Rotary Club, South Bend.

Jim Hanley

Jim graduated from Indiana College of Mortuary Science in 1965. He is a member of St. Pius X Church. He is a United States Army veteran having served as a paratrooper. Jim served many years as a funeral director at Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, as a board member and past president of Hospice of St. Joseph County, board member and past president of Visiting Nurses Association, and former board member of St. Joseph County Special Olympics. He is married to Hilda and they have four children and one granddaughter.

   

Elaine Crump

Elaine joined the Palmer Staff in March of 1999. She serves as Executive Secretary with her primary office at the River Park, South Bend location.  Elaine is the heart of our administrative support team. She graduated from Anderson University in 1980 with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. She is married to Greg, who is also a member of the Palmer staff, and mother of Kelly and Mike.

Helen Heim

Helen joined the Palmer Funeral Home Staff in September 2003. She serves as the secretary for the Guisinger Chapel and the Lakeville Chapel. She spent 17 years in the banking industry before joining the staff. She attends Granger Community Church and volunteers at her grandson’s school. She has a son, daughter, grandson and granddaughter. 

Christy Brewers

Christy Brewers joined the Palmer Funeral Home Staff in July, 2001 as a part-time secretary. She became a full-time secretary in September, 2009 with the addition of the Hickey Chapel on Cleveland Road. Christy received her B.A. from Ball State University in 1988 and relocated to Elkhart. She lives there with her husband and three sons, where they attend St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church.

 
 

Sally Fair

Sally Fair is a graduate of Riley High School, South Bend and attended Indiana University South Bend majoring in business and accounting. She has worked for 15 years as office manager for a pension consulting firm and has extensive experience in human resources, accounting and office administration.  Sally joined the staff at Southlawn Cemetery in October, 2009 as the office administrator. She is responsible for providing sales support and all clerical and administrative duties for the cemetery.  Sally and her husband Mike live in Lakeville, Indiana along with their three children, Erika, Madalyn, and Alex. They are active members of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in South Bend.

 

Tony McKee

Tony joined the Palmer family in December 2010. He has a degree from IUSB. Tony and his wife, Elaine have four sons and a daughter. He is a member of Corpus Christi Church.

   

Philip Bollenbacher

Philip joined the Palmer Family in March of 2011 as a Funeral Assistant. He graduated from Indiana University in 2009 with a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies. Philip is also currently serving as a Staff Sergeant in the Indiana Air National Guard, as a Maintenance Data Systems Analyst at the 122nd Fighter Wing out of Fort Wayne. His hobbies include traveling, hunting, and fishing.

 

 

 

Shauna Luthringer

Since 1993 Shauna has been listening and helping loved ones honor families lives through funeral pre arrangement relieving both an emotional as well as a financial burden. In addition to funeral pre arrangement and aftercare, Shauna is a Saging Circle Facilitator through Brainworks Memorial Hospital.  She has also been involved with South Bend School Corporation’s Women with Wisdom. She is married to John and they have a daughter Vaushna, son-in-law Leo, and four grandchildren Ty, Reilly, Braxton and Avery. They are members at North Liberty Church of Christ.

Kristi Palmer

Kristi received her B.S. from Purdue University in 1988. She taught special education and was also a Regional Sales Manager for in home sales until joining her brothers at the funeral homes in June of 2002. Kristi is the co-manager for Southlawn Cemetery and design consultant for all of our monument and marker sales. She also assists families with pre-arranging their funerals. She is the mother of two children, Leigha and Landon. and they attend North Liberty Church of Christ.  Her direct number for Monument or Marker sales is 574-292-5923.

Susan Taylor

Susan Taylor joined the Palmer Funeral Home Staff in July 2007. Susan assists families with after care and  preplanning. She’s married, has two daughters and is a member of North Liberty Church of Christ. Susan graduated in 1994 with an Associates degree in applied science.

 

Jamie Hall

Jamie joined our staff at Southlawn Cemetery in January 2011. She assists families with preplanning and after care.   Jamie is married to Gary and they have a daughter, Julia. She and her family attend Lakeville United Methodist Church

 

Jerry Klotz

Jerry joined the Palmer Family in March of 2002. He is a member of The Nappanee Missionary Church. Jerry helps with the maintenance of Southlawn Cemetery and manages Southlawn Cremation Services and Palmer's Pet Services.   Jerry and his wife Pam have two children, Hayden and Hannah.

 

Ron Clady

Ron Clady joined the Palmer Family in 2003 following his retirement from Teachers Credit Union and a thirty-nine year career in finance. He works part-time and assists wherever needed at visitations and funerals.   Ron and his wife, Judy, are members of Grace United Methodist Church in South Bend. They have two sons, two daughters-in-law, and six grandchildren.

 

Larry Clady

Larry joined the Palmer Funeral Home staff in August 2005 as part time help. Larry and his wife, Pat live in Lakeville where they are members of the Lakeville United Methodist Church, and he belongs to the Lakeville Masonic Lodge. Larry passed away in 2013.

 

Donald Snyder

Don & his wife Thelma Snyder live in South Bend where they raised two children, Mark and Jane. Don is a graduate of Central High School, a US World War ll Navy Veteran  and served in the US Naval Reserves for 8 years. He graduated from De Forest Radio & Television Engineering. He and Thelma have been  members of Grace United Methodist Church for over 50 years, where he serves as an Usher. He is a member of St. Joseph Valley Lodge #45; Past Master and Treasurer of South Bend Lodge # 294; Scottish Rite 32 Degree; and former Shrine and Tuxedo Patrol. Don has worked part time at Palmer's Funeral Homes for the past 16 years.

 

Jack O. Loutzenhiser

Jack and his wife of 65 years, Ellen, live in Mishawaka. Jack retired from Bendix Corporation after 48 years of service and has been with Palmer Funeral Homes for 9 years. He is a 50 year plus member of Grace United Methodist Church where he has presided as Head Usher for most of that time.  Jack is a member of Bendix Management Retirees Club, American Legion Post 284, and a lifetime member of V.F.W. Post 1167.

 

Bob DeCola

 

Bob joined Palmer Funeral Homes in July of 2012 after retiring from a banking career which covered over forty years. Bob and his wife Bonnie have two children and four grandchildren. They are members of St. Matthew Cathedral. In addition to spending time with his family, Bob also volunteers his time with the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry .

 Judy Kelly

Judy Kelly

Judy joined Palmer Funeral Homes in 2011 working part time as a greeter and with the Palmer Lunch and Learn Program.  She is a graduate of Presbyterian St. LukesHospital in Chicago; and beofre retiring enjoyed a 40 year career in nursing.  She lives in Mishawaka, has twin daughters and two grandchildren.  Judy loves to travel and is active in the Knute Rockne Kiwanis Club.

Roberta Spencer

Roberta Spencer has a Master's Degree from Jane Addams School of Social Work and certification as a pastoral minister from the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.. She joined the Palmer staff with 28 years of experience with a local hospice program. She enjoys working with people and uses her knowledge about grief and loss issues to assist others. She and her husband Tom are members of Saint Anthony's Parish. They are active community volunteers with a variety of programs assisting the poor, homeless, and people with disabilities.
