Welcome to the memorial page for

Betty "Bunny" L. (Dewitt) Baloy-Schmidt

June 21, 1924 ~ May 24, 2016 (age 91) 91 Years Old
Betty “Bunny” L. Baloy-Schmidt, 91, residing in South Bend, passed away peacefully at 2:30 pm Tuesday, May 24, 2016 in her home. She was born June 21, 1924 in Kokomo, IN to the late Raymond and Bessie Dewitt. She graduated from high school and began nurses training, until her family moved to Mishawaka, IN, due to her father’s job with Studebaker.

In 1946, Bunny married Richard Paul Baloy, and they moved to Mansfield, OH, where the first of their children was born, Gloria Baloy. They returned to the South Bend area and added three more children to their family: Jeffery, Terrence and Michael Baloy. Richard passed away unexpectedly in 1964. Stuck with four unruly children, Bunny pulled up her bootstraps, bought a second hand typewriter and went to work at Bullock’s Outboard Marine, where she worked for the next 22 years.

In 1970, Bunny married Raymond J. Schmidt, who brought two additional daughters to the family: Deborah (Bob) Van Arsdale and Rebecca Wetzel. Bunny and Ray worked until the mid 1980’s, when they decided to retire. They thoroughly enjoyed retirement, especially ocean cruises and bus trips.

Ray preceded her in death, as well as her sons, Jeffery and Terrence. Bunny continued to live comfortably and peacefully in her own home, where her wish was to spend her dying days. The family would like to give special thanks to Linda Redmond for caring for Bunny and treating her like her own mother for the last two years.

Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 noon - 2:00 pm Saturday, May 28, 2016 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Private inurnment will take place at a later date at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger, where Bunny will be laid to rest next to her husbands, Richard and Raymond.
