On behalf of all of the Sisters of the Holy Cross, I extend our deepest sympathy to the Wack family. James Wack is an example of the deep faith and dedication that is part of the Wack family DNA. He will be missed, and we will count on his continued ministry as an intercessor before God for all of us. May the prayers and loving compassion of the Sisters of the Holy Cross bring you peace in the days ahead.

Dear Alice Claire and Family:
Our sincere sympathy goes out to you all at the time of the death of your beloved husband, father, grandfather, doctor and friend to many, many people. He was a loving, supportive, caring husband, father and grandfather to all of you. He will be missed profoundly. Our faith in God reminds us that for James," life is changed and not ended!" He now lives in the Heavenly Community with his beloved God and his loved ones who have gone back to God, especially his mother asnd father. Our Ruetz family lived just two blocks away and all of us children went to St. Joseph Church and Grade School with each other. The Holy Cross Sisters, Brothers and Priests served our families through the year. My father and mother got to know Father Hugo Hoever, a refugee from Hitler Germany, who taught philosophy at Notre Dame, and lived in the house next to our family home. In the 1930s we went to the basement of the house he rented to attend his morning Masses. One basement room was made into a chapel. Jim's father, George, who taught German at Notre Dame, loved to visit Father Hoever on our front porch, after Father Hoever moved to Portland University. Father Hoever always spent his summer vacation at our home. Then George could come and speak German with Father Hoever, and talk about the information Father was receiving through the Vatican as to what was happening to his Cisterisan Community in Hitler Germany. Father sent a good part of his salary, through the Vatican, to his German religious community. It was a great neighborhood with the Rocknes, Cressys, Burkarts, Hickeys and many other families living in this area. May Jesus be a source of solace, comfort and strength at this time of deep grief and loss! Peace and Love! Dear Alice and Family

Know that our prayers are with you and the family. WE offer our condolences on Jim's passing. He was one grand guy who I came to know through Ray and Joanne when they were at Wawasee. It was nice to have Jim spend so much of his retirement time sailing with us on Rubicon. I will always remember his not wanting to go below on the boat and even sleeping standing up at the wheel with a drink in his hand late at night. He will be missed but we know he is in a better place with God.
Our love to you and your famiily

Dr. Wack was an amazing man. 35 years ago, I was a new mother with a very colicky, cranky baby.
He gave me his home phone number.
And told me to call at any time.
I remember one sleepless night that I was at my wits end. He told me that he would pray for me.

I will never forget his kindness.

My deepest sympathy to Alice and family. Dr. Wack (as I still picture him in one of his Hawaiian shirts) was the absolute kindest, compassionate man I have ever known. He delivered ME on HIS birthday with Dr. McCleod and we had a longstanding joke about it! One year, while going through a very difficult time, he sent me a birthday card with a message that was so kind - and funny - and I have never forgotten it. He was one of a kind and I am very sorry for his family’s loss - and for our community.

On My Way To Heaven
On my way to heaven
I'm going to stop and turn around
To give a wave to all my family
And friends
Who I leave behind
It wasn't easy leaving you
But the Lord has called me home
I know you all loved me
And I hope you know I loved you too
So if you ever need me
Look within your hearts
For that's where I'll be from now on
For that's where heaven starts

Dr. Wack became my Family physician when he stitched up my finger when I was 9 yrs old and I continued with him until he retired. He was also helpful with my career choice as an RN. I so loved his calmness, his ever so cheerful Hawaiian shirts, his knowledge and always taking time to explain what was occurring. He was a gentleman, a healer and a man of deep integrity. He was a staple in that proud old Hungarian neighborhood of Rum Village. Peace to all his loved ones.

To the entire Wack family,
Please accept my heartfelt sympathies for your loss. I was fortunate to work with Dr. Wack at Healthwin for many years. I remember when we got the aviary in our Lobby and we joked with him that he fit right in with the colorful birds with his Hawaiian shirts! You could not find a more caring physician or deeply religious man. May God's Grace strengthen your family during this difficult time.
