Betty (Elizabeth) Ann Mumaw, 87, of South Bend, IN. passed away due to natural causes on August 26th 2016. She was born February 21st, 1929 in East St. Louis, Illinois. As a child, her family moved to Lydick, Indiana, where she lived until she was married.
After settling in South Bend, Betty enjoyed long term employment at Robertson’s Department Store and the St. Joseph County Clerk’s office. She was a life-long Democrat who enjoyed campaigning and working local elections. Betty loved music and sang at many family and friends weddings, the Lincoln Highway Inn and the choir at St Anthony’s Parrish. She was well-known for her cooking skills. Family and friends occasionally commented she was the best cook that they had ever known. She loved to watch sports and was an avid Notre Dame football fan. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends at her home on Camellia Drive in South Bend on the weekends. Perhaps you remember seeing it. It was the one with the Fightin’ Irishman on the garage door that could be seen from Cleveland Road.
Betty is survived by her sister, Patricia (Jerry) Brucker; daughters, Bridgitte (Rick) Shireman and PJ (Collin) Gill; and a son Brian E. (Denise) Kroeger. Betty had seven grandchildren, Erinn and Kellen Shireman, Brian M, Danielle and Catrina Kroeger, Jon and Lucy Gill. Betty also had seven step children, Tom, Jerry, Pam, Sandy and Chrissy (Mumaw) Mark and Marcia (Sarchioto); along with numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Jane and David Roche; sisters, Mary Folk, Jane Watkins, Chris Ake, and Rita Bailey; and brothers, Dave, Pamp, and Joseph Roche.
The family would like to recognize and thank the staff members at Hamilton Grove who were much more than caregivers. They were Betty’s friends.
Funeral services for Betty will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday, September 1, 2016 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Rev. Terry Fisher will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm, with services at 1:00 pm on Thursday in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Betty’s name to Hamilton Grove Retirement Community, 31869 Chicago Trail, New Carlisle, IN 46552, where Betty was a long-time resident.
