Garrison C. Haynes

May 25, 1927 ~ January 6, 2018 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Garrison C. Haynes Sr., 90, residing in Osceola, and a former resident of South Bend, Dowagiac, MI and Englewood, FL passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018 surrounded by his loving family.  He was born May 25, 1927 in South Bend, IN, a son of the late Garrison C. and Dorothy (Knox) Haynes.

On October 18, 1952 at St. Matthew Cathedral Church in South Bend, Garrison was united in marriage to the love of his life, Helen Saros.  They enjoyed 53 years together and on January 18, 2006 Helen preceded him in death. 

Garrison is survived by his three daughters, Dorothy (Gary) Peden of Osceola, IN, Betty Gourley of Dowagiac, MI and Bobbie (Troy) Liffick of Mishawaka, IN; his son, Gary (Annie Streer) Haynes of Midlothian, IL; son-in-laws, James Ford of South Bend, and Jeff Gourley of Goshen, IN; 22 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; siblings Mary Matheny of Lakeville, IN and Norman (Bev) Haynes of Plymouth, IN and brother-in-law, Paul (Marty) Saros.  He was preceded in death by his daughters, Patricia Ford, Mary Haynes and Annie Balanow; one great-granddaughter; sister, Burnetha Redman; niece, Crystal Belisle and nephew, Danny Davis.

Garrsion retired from AM General, but worked many places over the years such as Studebaker, running his own mechanic shop and starting his own trucking company. He proudly served his country in the Navy during WWII as a Sea Bee.  He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and the UAW. Garrison will be deeply missed by his beloved K-9 companion, Snowball. He will always be remembered as a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather by his family.

A time of visitation will be from 4:00 – 8:00 pm. Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Palmer Funeral Home—Guisinger Chapel, South Bend, where a Rosary will be recited at 4:30 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 12, 2018 at 10 a.m. at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, 1701 Miami St, South Bend, IN 46613. He will be laid to rest next to his wife, Helen, at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN with full military honors.
