James "Cliff" Edwards

James “Cliff” Edwards, 89, passed away at 9:42 a.m. on Sunday, March 26, 2017, in his home after a brief illness.  He was born on July 1, 1927 in Linton, IN to the late Samuel David and Mamie (White) Edwards.  He graduated from Linton-Stockton High School in 1945.  Cliff married Dorothy Shamory on January 6, 1951.  She preceded him in death on November 5, 2004.  Together they raised their three children, Doug (Pam), Gary (Laura), and Susan (Terry) Basse. 

Cliff is survived by his sister, June Miller of Spencer, IN; his three children; eight grandchildren, Christi (Paul) Larkins, Adam Edwards, Patty Edwards, Andy Basse, Nick Basse, Allison Edwards, Sarah Edwards and Alex (Sara Shaw) Basse; five great grandchildren, Kahlan and Lilly Edwards, Emily and Megan Larkins, and Wendi Basse, plus one on the way.  He is also survived by his good friend and companion of the last nine years, Gretchen Kyle, and many nieces and nephews.  Cliff was preceded in death by his two sisters; Barbara Edwards and Maureen Branscom; two brothers-in-law, Charles Branscom and Everett “Peb” Miller; and his son-in-law, Terry Basse.

Cliff was an avid Cubs fan, fisherman and gardener.   He thoroughly enjoyed watching his team win the 2016 World Series.  Cliff proudly served his country during the Korean War with the United States Army.  He spent his life in construction, including as owner of Edwards Construction.  During his retirement, he was happy fixing up his lake house and helping his neighbors with theirs.  He had a very warm, generous heart and will be missed by many. 

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 30, 2017 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend.  Graveside services and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend.  Friends may visit with the family from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 29th, at the funeral home.
