Jean Gonter

January 22, 1925 – May 22, 2015

SOUTH BEND – Jean Gonter, 90, passed away at 3:00 AM Friday, May 22, 2015 at Hearth at Juday Creek, Granger, Indiana.  She was born on January 22, 1925 in Peru, Indiana to the late Hobart M. and Edna B. (Scherer) Johnson.  On March 9, 1947 in Peru, Indiana she was united in marriage to Edwin Gonter, Jr. who preceded her in death on February 8, 2015.  She lived in South Bend, Indiana from 1952 until moving to Granger in 2013.

Jean stayed at home with her children when they were young.  She was active in their schools, was a long-time member of P.T.A., and was a volunteer with Cub Scouts.  When her children were older, she taught at Sunnyside Presbyterian Pre-School and later had a career in the Law Office of Anthony Luber.  She was a member and actively served at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, South Bend, and was for many years avolunteer with Meals on Wheels.  She was a member of Order of Eastern Star.

Jean is survived by her daughter, Deborah Irmiter of Andover, New Jersey; two sons, Stephen (Peggy) Gonter of South Bend and Gary (Terry) Gonter of San Diego, California; grandchildren, Carolyn Jean Gonter (Jonathan) Hendricks, Laine Elizabeth (Daniel) Chidester, David Charles Irmiter and John Preston Irmiter; and great-grandchildren, Cadence, Keegan and Daxton Chidester. Jean was preceded in death by her brother, Hobart Johnson, and son-in-law, Charles Irmiter.

Memorial services for Jean Gonter will be held at 4:00 PM Friday, May 29 at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, 115 S.
