Welcome to the memorial page for

Jeffrey YunAn Mao

April 18, 1916 ~ February 2, 2016 (age 99) 99 Years Old

Jeffrey YunAn Mao was born April 18, 1916 in Shanghai, China to Mao Wen Long (father) and Fang Zhong Yin (mother). He passed away peacefully in his Mishawaka, Indiana home on February 2, 2016. He is survived by his son Richard and daughter-in-law, Helen.

Jeffrey lived and obtained his education in China, culminating in a B.A. degree at Central Political Institute (Nanking and Chungking). He married Mona Pao Mao in 1939.

He joined the (Nationalist) Chinese Diplomatic Service in 1939, starting his career in Canada, lastly attaining the rank of Consul for the Republic of China in Houston, Texas. Jeffrey transitioned to teaching starting in 1955, having earned M.A. degrees from University of Ottawa, Canada and Harvard University and finally, his PhD in International Relations from University of Chicago. He taught for seven years as an Associate Professor at Central College, Pella, Iowa and for twenty-two years as a full Professor of Political Science at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio.

Jeff's retirement started in 1984 and included supporting his beloved wife, Mona in her quest for achievement in tournament duplicate bridge, as well as extensively traveling abroad together. Mona preceded Jeffrey in death in 2007. Jeffrey started the final phase of his life living with Richard and Helen in Mishawaka. There he enjoyed extensive travels accompanying Richard in his son's hobby of playing Scottish bagpipes at festivals, competitions, schools, and parades. Another highlight of these years was taking his son and daughter-in-law on their first trip to China, both visiting many tourist sites and also connecting with the Chinese branches of Jeff's family in Shanghai and Beijing.

The family anticipates a remembrance get-together on April 18, 2016 when Jeff would have been 100 years young. On-line condolences may be sent to the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the Jeffrey Y Mao Scholarship Fund, Wittenberg University, P.O.Box 720, Springfield, Ohio 45501.
