John Elmer McLean

John Elmer McLean, 71, lifelong South Bend resident, passed away peacefully at 3:30 pm Tuesday, October 11, 2016 in Cardinal Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, South Bend. He was born March 16, 1945 in South Bend to George McLean and Phyllis (Jones) Dyer.
 
John graduated from South Bend Central High School in 1963. He earned a BS degree in Social Studies in 1967 from Indiana State University in Terre Haute, IN. He went on  to earn an MS degree in Secondary Education from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1973 and finally a 6th year post graduate degree from Indiana University, South Bend in 1978. John taught Junior and Senior High School Social Studies in the Argos Community School District  from 1967 - 1976, where he also coached basketball. He then worked as an insurance inspector for Commercial Services Inc. in Grand Rapids, MI from 1976 - 1987. John was previously a member of First Presbyterian Church.
 
John was preceded in death by his father, George McLean; his stepfather, Bill Dyer; and a sister, Jeanie Ruth. He is survived by his mother, Phyllis Dyer of South Bend; and his sister, Catherine Gillis of Mishawaka; as well as three nieces and two nephews.
 
Funeral services for John will be held at 12:00 pm Saturday, October 15, 2016 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Graveside services and burial will follow in Riverview Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services on Saturday in the funeral home.
 
Expressions of sympathy in memory of John may be donated to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.
