June Waterman

June 29, 1923 – September 13, 2015

 

MISHAWAKA – June Waterman, 92, residing in Mishawaka, Indiana passed away at 3:45 PM Sunday, September 13, 2015 at the Sanctuary at St. Paul’s, South Bend.

June was born on June 29, 1923 in Mishawaka to the late Ray L. Waterman and Irene (Newcomb) Waterman and has been a lifelong resident of this area, growing up in River Park, attending Sunday School at River Park United Methodist Church, and graduating from the former South Bend Central High School, in 1941.  She also attended classes at Indiana University Extension (IUSB) and later went on to graduate from I.U. Bloomington in 1951 with an Associate’s Degree and Teaching License. While teaching at Lakeville High School, she attended summer classes at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she earned her Master’s Degree.  June taught English and Social Studies at Central High School for 10 years, and later taught English at Riley High School for 18 years, before retiring in 1983.

June has enjoyed playing golf since the age of 14 years old and was actively involved in women’s golfing at Eberhart Golf Course and Erskine Golf Course.  She also was an amateur radio operator, a genealogy researcher, and enjoyed traveling.

She is survived by her brother, John (Waneta) Waterman of St. Petersburg, FL and many nieces and nephews, Gail Suter, Nancy Sarkisian, Carol Stout, Rick Sarkisian, John Waterman, Steven Waterman, Ray Waterman, III, and James Waterman.  Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara (Dickran) Sarkisian; brother, Ray Waterman, II; and niece, Anna Waterman. 

Funeral services for June Waterman will be at 12:00 Noon Friday, September 18, 2015 at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN 46615, where friends may visit with the family two hours prior to services (10:00 AM till 12:00 Noon).  Rev. Shar Kobb, pastor at River Park United Methodist Church will officiate. Graveside services will follow at Fairview Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.  Online condolences may be expressed to the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com
