Lawrence L. Myers, 94, residing in South Bend, passed away at 1:45 a.m. Sunday, April 26, 2015 at Milton Home.

He was born September 24, 1920 in Greenville, Ohio, to the late William H. & Erma (Ritenour) Myers. They moved to South Bend when Larry was 4 years old, and he has remained a lifelong resident. On October 5, 1941 in South Bend, Larry was united in marriage to the love of his life, Betty M. Warner.  Together they enjoyed 70 years of marriage until her passing on August 31, 2012.

Larry retired from the South Bend Tribune in 1982 where he worked for 50 years.  He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, St. Joseph Lodge #45, F. & AM., American Turners, and the American Legion Post 303, and was an active member of the former Avalon Grotto.  He proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WWII.  Larry and Betty enjoyed their cottage at Indian Lake “Tice Beach” in Dowagiac, Michigan for thirty-five years, and also enjoyed wintering in Bonita Springs, FL for 28 years after retirement. He was proud of being coached at Central High School in baseball by the legendary John Wooden. He also golfed, fished in Canada and at Indian Lake, bowled, collected coins and stamps, and tinkered at fixing things.

He is survived by his daughter Rebecca S. Akai (partner, Steve Cline) of Lakeville, IN; four grandchildren, Jennifer Carroll (Mark Remus), Jeffrey (Tracy) Carroll, Jessica (Lee) Kendall, and Carol Akai, along with five great-grandchildren, Taylor Watson, Austin & Parker Lee, Nolan Carroll, and Braxton Kendall.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend.  Rev. Greg Crump will officiate. Graveside services and military honors will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
