Maclin S. Hall

May 12, 1926 ~ April 5, 2015 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Maclin S. Hall, 88, passed away peacefully at 5:43 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2015 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born May 12, 1926 in Shelby County, OH to Carleton Samuel and Caroline Dorothy (Schnelle) Hall. On December 29, 1951 in Findlay, OH, he married Jean Clare Shafer of Findlay.

Graduating from Sidney High School in 1943, Maclin “Mac” attended Miami University in Oxford, OH where he was a member of the football team for one season before returning home to help on the family farm after his father died. Called into the Army during World War II, he arrived in Europe just after VE Day and served with the Military Police in Germany and Austria. After the war, he returned to complete his education at Miami University, graduating Phi Beta Kappa with honors in 1949 with a bachelors degree in Physics. He continued in graduate studies at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, where he received his Ph.D. in Physics in 1957. He had a long career in industrial research, working for The NCR Corporation (Dayton, OH), Owens-Illinois (Okemos, MI and Toledo, OH), and The Institute of Paper Science & Technology (Appleton, WI and Atlanta, GA), retiring at the age of 74. He was awarded 10 patents throughout his career.

Mac had a humble, loving, gentle, and generous spirit. He was never heard to say an unkind word about anyone or anything. He had strong inner resources and a firm faith, a sharp intellect and keen wit. His life lessons perfected in him the wisdom of living in the moment and the ability to go with the flow in all situations and circumstances. Over the course of his life, he loved beekeeping, playing cards and chess, small Rebel sailboat racing, building boat docks and dog houses, stamp collecting, stock charting, wine making, music, poetry, reading, feeding the birds, working puzzles, and sports, especially rooting for his beloved Chicago Cubs. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family. His volunteer work included serving as the President of the Okemos Rotary Club, Rear and Vice Admiral of the Perrysburg Boat Club, and supporting his children in many activities including delivering newspapers, scouting, marching band, and sports.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Louis, and Jean, his beloved wife of 61 years on January 29, 2013. He is survived by his sister-in-law Vera Hall of Sidney, OH, and four children, Eric (Kathy) Hall of Brighton, MI, Jonathan (Teri) Hall of Lynnfield, MA, Jennifer (Paul) Masterson of Zanesville, OH and Douglas (Cathy) Hall of South Bend, IN. Mac is also survived by his twelve grandchildren, Michelle (Max) Powers, Carleton Hall, Michael Maclin Hall, Joshua Hall, Andrew Hall, Emily (Ryan Smith) Masterson, Jillian Masterson, Paul Jacob Masterson, Maclin Masterson, Nicholas Hall, Mary Kathryn Hall, and Caroline Hall; by nephews Larry (Jo) Hall of Sidney, OH and Bob (Sandy) Hall of Elk Point, SD; and by niece Marilyn (Richard) Jacobson of Chalfont, PA.

Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services in the church. Vicar Larry Novak will officiate. Graveside services and burial will follow with military honors at Glen Cemetery, Port Jefferson, OH. Palmer Funeral Home, South Bend and Cromes Funeral Home, Sidney, OH are assisting the family.
