Marion Regina Weissert, 95, passed away on March 31, 2015 in her home in South Bend, IN. Reggie was born September 9, 1919 in Morenci, MI to H. Thane and Margaret Bauman. The oldest of seven children, she graduated with honors, Salutatorian, from Resurrection High School and attended Mt. St. Joseph’s College in OH.

In 1944, Reggie met Ralph Weissert, whom she married on March 2, 1946. They moved to South Bend that same year.

Regina is survived by her children, Susan (Larry Rich), Tom (Diane), Chris (Don Rutledge) and John (Susan); as well as her nine grandchildren, Kira (Steve), Jason (Kelly), Noah (Amber), Shannon (Jay), Erin (Danny), Molly (David), Adam, Andrew and Micaela; and great grandchildren, Connor, Adriana, Ryan, JJ, Patrick, Kyle, Eli, Quinn, Ian, Kasha, Max, Molly, Zoey, Piper, Amelia and August. She is also survived by her sister, Rita Bauman. She was preceded in death by her husband; daughters, Mary and Ellen; brother, Thane; and sisters, Peg, Rosemary and Patricia.

Reggie’s parents, her husband Ralph, Fr. Louis Putz and the Christian Family Movement were the major influences in her life. Always open to learning and deeply committed to justice and peace, women and young people, she participated in a multiple efforts in her local community. Members of Little Flower Parish, she and Ralph belonged to the Christian Family Movement, serving on the National and International Coordinating Committees. She introduced their family to the wider world by welcoming international students to the family through international student programs. In the late 60’s, Reggie was involved with the local paper “The Reformer”, a local African-American newspaper, and served on the Panel of American Women. From 1973 - 1980, she ran the summer program for the Catholic Committee on Urban Ministry, and later worked at Notre Dame’s Center for Social Concern. Over the years, she served on the boards of Planned Parenthood, the United Religious Community and the Catholic Worker House. She volunteered at the Center for the Homeless and St. Augustine’s Soup Kitchen, and was an active member of Call to Action. In 2004, Reggie initiated the local Interfaith Women’s Dialogue Group with Rihab Quddoura, firmly believing that dialogue is crucial for people to bring about peace.

The family would like to thank the staffs of the Center for Hospice Care and Senior 1 Care for their compassionate service.

The Mass of Celebration for Regina Weissert will take place at 2:00 pm Monday, April 6, 2015 in the Church of Our Lady of Loretto, St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN. Friends may visit with the family for one hour prior to mass in the church. Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services assisting the family with arrangements.
