Martin Craig Canfield, 66, residing in South Bend, passed away peacefully at 5:00 am Tuesday, June 14, 2016 in Signature Health Care of South Bend. He was born November 29, 1949 in Mishawaka to the late Clement and Virginia (Huba) Canfield, and remained a lifelong area resident.
Martin grew up as a member of St. Monica and St. Joseph Catholic Churches in Mishawaka. He graduated from Mishawaka High School and worked in maintenance with several companies over the years and volunteered at St. Vincent de Paul. Marty was a big Notre Dame and Chicago Cubs fan. He loved sports and enjoyed playing golf with his dad and brothers. He was dealt a number of health problems over the years, staring with polio at the age of four, but he had an infectious laugh and a sweetness about him that belied his many challenges. His loving family will miss him always.
Surviving Martin are his sisters, Janet Grauel and Patricia (Gerard) Welling, both of South Bend and Marilyn (Jim) Skaalerud of Lebanon, TN; brothers, Thomas (Deborah) Canfield of Elkhart, Michael (Celine) Canfield of San Antonio, TX, Gregory Canfield of South Bend and James (Irma) Canfield, also of San Antonio, TX; and 23 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Dolores Canfield.
There will be private memorial services planned for a date yet to be determined. Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel and Southlawn Cremation Services are assisting the family with arrangements.
