Mary Jane Greenawalt

Mary Jane Greenawalt, 89, of Mishawaka, IN passed away at 7:45 p.m. Monday, February 8, 2016 in her home, surrounded by loving family. She was born on December 17, 1926 in Goshen, IN to the late Paul and Bernice (Miller) Shank-Mischker. On September 24, 1950 at Ridgedale Presbyterian Church in South Bend, IN, she was united in marriage to DeFoe L. Greenawalt, who survives.

Mrs. Greenawalt is survived by two daughters, Diana (Thomas) Panzica of Granger, IN and Tami Greenawalt of Cary, NC; two grandchildren, Christopher Panzica of Nashville, TN and Catherine Panzica of Chicago, IL; and sister-in-law, Sherrie (Jerry) DeFord of Elkhart, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Betty Jean Alderfer-Earl.

Mary Jane was a lifelong area resident, graduating from John Adams HS in 1945. She worked at South Bend Lathe as an executive assistant, in sales at Newman’s apparel, and as a teller at Norwest Bank. She was a longtime active member of Coalbush United Methodist Church, where she regularly performed community service.

An outgoing, fun-loving person with many friends, for decades Mary Jane looked forward to lively monthly gatherings of her two bridge clubs. She loved and cherished her family, especially her grandchildren who brought so much joy to her life. Among her many interests was traveling with family both home and abroad, including at age eighty going with her husband on an adventurous three-week journey through Australia and New Zealand. 

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday, February 12, 2016 at Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan St. South Bend, IN. Graveside services and burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Friday.

The family wishes to acknowledge dedicated staff of The Center for Hospice, including Stephanie, Connie, Michelle, Candace, Jim and all the others for their exceptional care and support.
