Michael Swadener

Michael “Mike” A. Swadener, 70, of South Bend, IN, passed away on October 13, 2017 surrounded by his family. Mike was born on December 1, 1947 to Robert and Jane (Powell) Swadener.

He grew up in Mishawaka, graduating from Mishawaka High School in 1966. Mike went on to serve in the United States Navy in Vietnam. He completed his education at Purdue University, graduating with a Bachelors degree of Science in Civil Engineering in 1984. In 2012, Mike retired from the Notre Dame aerospace lab where he oversaw the machine shop.

Mike’s passion was motorcycling, he loved riding on long trips or just to the store. He logged 10,000 miles this year completing his goal to go to every state west of the Mississippi and south of Canada. He was a 28-year member of ABATE, a 13-year member of Star Touring & Riding, and he also belonged to the AMA and MRF. He loved his Yamaha Stratoliner. Mike was a member of the American Legion Post 0303 and a lifetime member of the VFW. Mike was also a long-time member of the Cathedral of St. James Episcopal Church in South Bend.

Mike is survived by his wife, Margaret “Peg” Swadener; stepsons, Derek (Patti) Stoelting and Clint (Krysie) Stoelting; two adorable grandsons; mother, Jane (Bob) Fesler; sister, Rachel (John) Lathrop; brothers, Patrick Swadener, Tom (Terry) Swadener, and Daniel (Beth) Swadener as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Swadener; and his step-father, Bob Fesler.

Services for Mike will be at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 21, at the Cathedral of St. James 117 N. Lafayette Blvd. South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family for two hours prior to the service at the church.
