Norma Eberhart Obituary

Norma Eberhart of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on February 12, 2018 after a brief illness. She was a beloved wife, mother and grandmother. Survivors include a daughter Lynn Kozlowski and husband Steve of Aliso Viejo, CA, and two sons, Rob Eberhart and fiancée Kirstin Peterson of Palm City, Florida, and Scott Eberhart and wife Dayanara of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and grandchild Brandon Eberhart in Tampa, Florida.

Norma was born in Jacksonville, Florida, on November 7, 1931 as an only child to parents Thomas P. Lynch and Ella Belle Lynch, both deceased. In her early years in a Navy family, she moved every five years between cities of San Francisco, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, and finally Coral Gables, Florida where her father was a Certified Public Accountant.

In 1959, while living in Coral Gables, Florida, and attending the University of Miami, Norma met and married her husband, Robert C. Eberhart, an architect, serving Strategic Air Command in the United States Air Force at Homestead, Florida.

With him working as the military liaison on the building of 1,255 Capehart housing units on base, they were among the first able to move into one of the new duplex units as assigned to officers.

During this time, Norma was an active member of the Miami Junior Woman’s Club. After graduating from the University of Miami with a degree in sociology and two minors with one in education, she became a first-grade teacher in the West Miami area and then Homestead, Florida.

Upon moving to South Bend, Indiana in 1968, she continued her teaching career in 1-12 grades as a substitute teacher while continuing to raise a family of two sons and a daughter.

Throughout the years, Norma participated in many activities and was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, AAUW, The Art League, GFWC/IFC Progress Club, and Panhellenic organizations. She also enjoyed traveling, book clubs, church choir, bowling league, and performing in civic plays.

One of Norma’s highlights was as a member of the Bethel Choral Society, having the privilege with her husband of singing with the choruses at New York City’s prestigious Carnegie Hall. As chorus members under the direction of the world-renowned composer and conductor John Rutter, they performed Parts II and III of Handel’s Messiah on Thanksgiving Day 1988.

Norma was also active as a member of Clay United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church of South Bend.
