Orville E. Basil

December 13, 1926 ~ February 25, 2015

Orville E. Basil, 88, residing in South Bend, passed away at 12:23 am Wednesday, February 25, 2015 in his home. He was born December 13, 1926 in Peoria, IL to the late Harry and Viola Basil.

On  May 31, 1947 in South Bend, Orville married Patsy June Simmerman, who preceded him in death on January 7, 2012. He was also preceded by sisters, Pauline Lutticken and Phyllis Krueger; and brothers, Donald Basil, Harry Basil, Jr. and John Claeys.

Orville is survived by his son, James (Ann Hamilton) Basil of Eugene, OR; daughters, Deborah (Drew) Bridges of Austin, TX and Linda (Dennis McNary) Basil of Mishawaka; six grandchildren, Matthew, Jason, Jessica, Sarah, Leah and Melissa; and nine great grandchildren.

Orville served his country honorably in the United States Coast Guard from 1943-1946. He co-owned and operated the Blue Note Lounge and the Boul-Jeff Restaurant in South Bend until retirement. He enjoyed his retirement years with Pat attending grandsons Matt and Jason's many athletic events, particularly their hockey games. They didn’t miss a game. Orville was also known for his 'famous' baked beans, which were enjoyed by friends and family from all over.  He should have patented them!  He truly loved children....had a way with them....especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren....he knew the buttons to push to put a smile on their faces. He will be greatly missed by all.

Funeral services for Orville will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, March 1, 2015 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Private burial will take place at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 noon until service time on Sunday in the funeral home.

The family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to Orville’s neighbors, Joe and Cindy, Kevin and Tracy and Shawn and Lynn; the Center for Hospice Care; and his personal caregiver, Charlie Cauffman.

Memorial contributions may be donated to Pet Refuge, 4626 Burnett Drive, South Bend, IN 46614. Online condolences may be left for the Basil family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
