Sandra D. Herr, a lifelong resident of South Bend, passed away at 4:10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, 2106 at her home, and into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, with her loving husband and children by her side. She was 79 years old.
She was born August 8, 1937 in Mishawaka, IN; a daughter of Howard E. & Merry E. (Deacon) Zerbe. She was a graduate of John Adams High School, and Anderson (IN) College where she received her BA in Social Work. On August 27, 1961 at South Side Church of God, South Bend, as Sandra Zerbe, she was united in marriage to the love of her life, Donald D. Herr. They recently observed their 55th anniversary.
In addition to her husband, Don, she is survived by her three children, Holly S. Herr, of South Bend, IN; Heidi L. Herr, of Elkhart, IN; and Hans C. Herr, of Crown Point, IN; five grandchildren, Kurtis, Evan & Elizabeth Herr-Knispel, Brendan Herr, and Louisa Jaquez-Herr. Sandy is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl & Richard Baird of Norcross, GA; and her brother, J. Charles Zerbe of Michigan City, IN.
Following her graduation from college, Sandy worked as a Social worker with the Dept. of Family Services. She retired in 2000 as a Substitute Teacher with the South Bend Community School Corp. She was a longtime faithful member of South Side Church of God. Sandy was an excellent seamstress, and enjoyed quilting, reading and her flower garden.She always showed the love of Christ, and was a great encourager to all those she knew.
A memorial service celebrating the life of Sandy Herr will be at 11:00a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at South Side Church of God, 7351 U.S. 31 South, South Bend. Rev. Greg D. Crump will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
