SOUTH BEND – Sheldon R. Maxey, 84, residing in South Bend, Indiana passed away at 9:20 PM Saturday, July 25, 2015 at the Trail Point Nursing Home, South Bend.

Sheldon was born on December 9, 1930 in Mishawaka, IN to the late James Clark Maxey and Thelma Priscilla (Moore) Maxey, and has been a lifetime resident of this area, attending James Whitcomb Riley High School and Indiana University.

Sheldon proudly served our country in the United States Marines during the Korean War Conflict and was a member of American Legion Post 303, South Bend, where he served eight times as a Past Commander.  Sheldon worked as a manufacturing engineer for Bendix Corporation for 28 years, retiring in 1988 and was a member of the Bendix Senior Management Club.  Sheldon and his wife, Shirley, and their family enjoyed traveling throughout the west.  He also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, and loved their pet dog, Sassie.

On June 6, 1952 at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, South Bend, he was united in marriage to Shirley L. (Ferro) Maxey, who survives.  He is also survived by his two sons, Tony R. Maxey of St. Charles, Iowa and Tracy L. Maxey of Granger, Indiana; and his brothers, James (Coralice) Maxey and Richard (Judith) Maxey, both of South Bend.  Sheldon was preceded in death by his parents, James and Thelma Maxey; and his son, Scott Allen Maxey, who died at birth.

Memorial Service and Military Rites for Sheldon R. Maxey will be at 4:00 PM Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Palmer Funeral Home – River Park Chapel, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN 46616, where friends may gather with the family 2 hours preceding services (2:00 PM till 4:00 PM).  Memorial contributions may be given to American Legion Post 303, 2503 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend, IN 46615 or to ABC Clinic – Animal Hospital, 4525 S.
