Ted Bernard Gilbert

Ted Bernard Gilbert, 80, passed away on Monday, March 12, 2018 at Signature Healthcare of South Bend. He was born on February 22, 1938 in Moline, IL, to James and Maryruth (Settle) Gilbert, both of whom preceded him in death.

Ted is survived by children, Celeste (Jim) Gantzler of Colorado; Benjamin Gilbert of Elkhart, IN; Heather (Matthew) Chambers of Osceola, IN; Heidi (Michael) Douglass of Greenwood, IN.  He is also survived by eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his cat, “Midnight.” In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his wife, Sandra S. Gilbert on April 22, 2013, his son Ted Gilbert Junior as well as his sister, Suzanne Brown.

Ted received a Master of Electrical Engineering from University of Illinois where he received a James Scholar award.  He also accomplished a master of Engineering Management from Bradley University.

He was employed as an electrical engineer in the aerospace industry. He has several working patents and awards in the industry.  His employment included Loral Corporation, Allied Signal, Honeywell and Goodyear.  Some of his work consisted of navigation and engine controls of the F-22, F-35 and the SR-71 Black Bird to name a few.

After retirement he volunteered at Cedar Road Missionary Church of Osceola Indiana.  He also volunteered heavily at Memoria Hospital of South Bend.

Funeral services for Ted will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at St. Mark Missionary Church, 55240 Bittersweet Road, Mishawaka, IN. Rev. Neil Davis will officiate. Committal service will follow in the mausoleum at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, IN. Friends may visit with the family from 6:00-8:00pm on Friday, March 16th at Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN, and also 10:00-11:00am on Saturday at the church prior to services.
