Virginia Mae Evans, 87, residing in South Bend, passed away at 9:27 pm Tuesday, September 29, 2015 in Healthwin Specialized Care. She was born April 27, 1928 in South Bend to the late Everett and Inez (Slocum) Hyatt and remained a lifelong area resident.
On June 22, 1947 in South Bend, Virginia married Charles D. Evans, who preceded her in death on March 19, 2012. She was also preceded by her siblings, Dorothy Ford, Richard Hyatt and Homer Hyatt.
Virginia is survived by two daughters, Sherry (Paul) Evans-Everling of Indianapolis, IN and Debrah K. (Charlie) Evans-Webb of Kenton, TN; three grandchildren, Alan (Gia) Mitchell, Dawn Pletcher and Steve Garrison, all of South Bend; six great grandchildren, Vince and Samantha Mitchell, Brandon and Jacob Pletcher and Grace and Abigail Garrison; and two great great grandsons, Seth and Vincent Mitchell.
Virginia was a candy striper for several years in the nursery at the South Bend Osteopathic Hospital as well as a key punch operator at St. Joseph Valley Bank. Her greatest time was spent as a homemaker, and she will be greatly missed by her family left behind. A special thanks to Dr. John Jacobs for his care and kindness over the years and the staff of Healthwin Hospital as well as Eric from Southern Care Hospice for watching over our mother and taking care of her when we couldn’t be there.
Memorial services for Virginia will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, October 9, 2015 in the Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, where friends may visit with the family two hours prior to services. Pastor Stephen Apolo will officiate. Private burial will be held at Highland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be donated to the Humane Society of St. Joseph County, 2506 Grape Road, Mishawaka, IN 46545. Online condolences may be left for the Evans family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
