William “Jack” Thomas Chapman, residing in Mishawaka, passed away quietly at 2:40 a.m. Saturday, May 9, 2015 at Michiana Health & Rehabilitation Center, Mishawaka after a six year courageous battle from complications from surgery. He was 80 years old.
He was born June 30, 1934 in Valley Falls, South Carolina, a son of Joseph Seay & Bessie (McAfee) Chapman, and has lived in Mishawaka since 1972, coming from LaPorte, IN.
On August 19, 1974 in Shelbyville, TN, he was united in marriage to Phyllis Fuchs who survives. He is also survived by his children, Lisa (Larry) Crider of Mishawaka, IN; his son, Joseph (Diane) Chapman of Wakarusa, IN, Tammy McCollough of Lutz, FL, Bruce (Tildi) Walters of Osceola, IN; and a special daughter, Shirley (Kelly) Guin of South Bend, IN. Also surviving are nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and many more who claimed him as pa paw; and a sister, Jeanette Sherbert of Spartanburg, SC and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Della Kitchens, and a brother, Vernon Chapman.
Mr. Chapman retired in 1995 after working for 40 years as an Independent Truck Driver; then worked at Hub Cap Annie for five years. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corp. in Korea where he was awarded a Purple Heart. Jack was a member of V.F.W. Post 360, and the American Legion both of Mishawaka and the DAV of Elkhart.
The family will receive friends from 4:00 – 8:00 pm Wednesday, at the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Ave., South Bend. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, May 14 at the funeral home. Gravesite services with military honors will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.
