Eugene L. "Gene" Chavis, 81, passed away at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 21, 2012 at the St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka.  Mr. Chavis was born on August 31, 1931 in South Bend to the late Edward and Henrietta (Bucholtz) Chavis.  He has remained a lifelong resident.  On December 4, 1954 in Plymouth, he married Kay L. Birmingham who preceded in death on November 4, 2004. 
Mr. Chavis retired in 1996 after 35 years as the owner of the former Kwik Kafe Distributors of South Bend.  He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge in Mishawaka.  Mr. Chavis was also a member of Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Valley of South Bend, Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks and Order of the Eastern Star.  Mr. Chavis served his country during the Korean War with the United States Marines.  He was an avid Notre Dame and New York Yankee fan.  He enjoyed listening to Frank Sinatra.   Mr. Chavis was a grateful man and was extremely proud of his family.
Mr. Chavis is survived by his three children, Kathryn (Andy) Smith of Mishawaka, Karen (Jeff) Wesolek of South Bend, and Keith Chavis of South Bend; four grandchildren, Holly (Matthew) Abbott of Indianapolis, and Kobe, Keegan and Kassidy Wesolek, all of South Bend; one sister, Linda (Grant) Ruth of Mishawaka; and two nephews, Patrick (Christine) Ruth of Dayton, OH, and Brandon (Michelle) Ruth of Granger.
Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at the Palmer Funeral Home-River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend.  Rev. Greg Crump will officiate.  Friends may visit with the family from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday.
