Mary M. "Peg" Gervas Obituary

Mary M. "Peg" Gervas, a cherished wife, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 9, 2024, in Mishawaka, at the age of 77. Born on September 7, 1946, in South Bend, Indiana, to the late Fred H. and Mary V. (Bailey) Boyer, Peg was a beacon of kindness and love throughout her life.

Peg graduated from Riley High School and soon after found her calling at the St. Joseph County Public Library. For 48 years, she dedicated her time and talents to the Acquisitions department, retiring in 2011. Her commitment to her work was only matched by her devotion to her family and her faith.

On November 7, 1970, Peg married the love of her life, Vaughn Gervas, in South Bend. Together, they built a life filled with joy, music, and community service. Peg is survived by her loving husband, Vaughn, and her caring brothers, David (Judy) Boyer of Sun City Center, FL, and Fred (Judy) Boyer of Port Charlotte, FL. She was preceded in death by her sister, Sue Montgomery, and brother-in-law, Bob Montgomery.

Peg's love for bluegrass and country music was a thread woven throughout her life. She shared her musical talents by ringing bells with the First Christian Church, where she was an active member, and later with the Southside Christian Church. Her faith and music took her on many travels, spreading joy and fellowship wherever she went.

Her generosity knew no bounds, especially when it came to her passion for knitting. Peg spent countless hours knitting hats for children in the homeless community, creating over 100 hats each year. This act of love was a testament to her caring nature and her desire to make the world a warmer, more welcoming place for everyone.

Peg and Vaughn were a familiar sight at local art fairs, craft shows, and 4H fairs, always supporting their community and enjoying the creativity of others. Their Sunday and Monday afternoons were often spent at the park, soaking in the melodies of live music performances. Together, they also delighted in the theatrical productions at the Round Barn, celebrating the arts in all its forms.

Travel was another joy for Peg, as she and Vaughn explored new places and experienced the beauty of different cultures. Their adventures were as much about the journey as the destination, with each trip bringing new memories to cherish.
