Bertha Brown Obituary

Bertha M. Brown, 76, of South Bend, transitioned to her home in glory at 9:35 p.m., Monday, April 9, 2018 at Creekside Village in Mishawaka, Indiana. Such a precious jewel was born on May 5, 1941 in Union City, Tennessee, to the late Caroline Dickey and David Johnson. During her early years she was reared by her grandmother and was taught about life and values, until she passed away. She relocated to South Bend, Indiana at an early age and was educated by the South Bend School System. On September 11, 1965, she was united in holy matrimony to the late Earl Lee Brown in Niles, Michigan, who was the love of her life. She remained faithful and devoted to him until the Lord called him home in 1995.

Mrs. Brown retired from the South Bend Community School Corporation as a Title I Assistant for over 30 years. She had a passion and love for helping children succeed in education. She was also employed with AWS for nine years as a personal assistant for people with disabilities.

Mrs. Brown was saved and filled with the precious gift of the Holy Ghost under the leadership of Bishop James R. Hopson, Mother Olevia Hopson and Bishop John Brown, Sr. While she was a member of the Holiness Church of God, God taught her how to become a woman of faith. She was an ordained Evangelist while serving at the Holiness Church of God. She worked tirelessly in the ministry to win souls for the Lord. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Gethsemane Church of God in South Bend, Indiana where she served as the usher board president and a prayer warrior until her health declined.

Mrs. Brown was a very proud mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, godmother, aunt and friend. She is survived by her children: Michael Boykins, Marcia Humphrey-Benman, Gregory (Josephine) Brown; seventeen grandchildren: Martinez (Tameka) Marbley, Rochelle Brown, Marcus Humphrey, Greg Moore, Ashley Humphrey, Whitney Humphrey, Isaiah Moore, Darnell Moore, Sr., Dontrill Trotter, Sr., Jayla (Deontae) Brank, Myla Miller, Jamyla Lockhart, Tony Frison, Satchell Brocks, Myra Alston, Tyler George and Skye Williams; great-grandchildren to include: R'nyah Humphrey, Maiyah Humphrey, Maliyah Humphrey, Derrick Humphrey, Darnell Moore, Jr., Dontrill Trotter, Jr., Zayden Moore, Starlet Brank, Quentin Williams, Arzenio Williams, Tia Williams, Breonna Williams, Jorey Williams, Robert Williams; ten godchildren, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. Mrs. Brown was preceded in death by her husband, Earl L. Brown; her parents, Caroline Dickey and David Johnson; brother William Louis White.

Mrs. Brown was a faithful supporter of Hope Ministries, American Red Cross, Disabled Veterans, the Kidney Foundation and many other charities. She enjoyed cooking, baking, sewing, reading the Bible, spending time with family and friends and helping others. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 119:71: “It is good for me that I am afflicted; that I might learn His statues”.
