Carl E. Loyd, 86, of Mishawaka, IN passed away at 1:05 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, 2012 at the Center for Hospice Care in Roseland, IN. He was born on November 24, 1925, in Bush, IL to the late Virgil. and Opal (VanZandt) Loyd. 

On July 1, 1944, in New Orleans, LA, he married Elaine E. (Runyan) Loyd, who survives.  He is also survived by children, Pamela (Douglas) Whitmer of South Bend, IN, Michele A. Simrell of Niles, MI, Craig (Tina) Loyd of Plymouth, IN, eight grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.  Carl is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Louis L. Loyd.

Mr. Loyd has lived in South bend since 1941, coming from Illinois. He served his country honorably in the United States Navy. He attended Notre Dame University on a basketball scholarship prior to being drafted and later finished his schooling at Notre Dame. He was a member of the Notre Dame Monogram Club and played basketball professionally for the Hammond Buccaneers.  He retired in 1985, after 35 years of service at Peter Eckrich & Sons.  He attended Community Baptist Church in South Bend.

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, September 2, 2012 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend, Indiana.  Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend.   The family will receive relatives and friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
