Mrs. Dorothy Baskin, age 84, departed this life after a short illness on Saturday, May 11, 2019 in her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born September 21, 1934 in Greenwood, Mississippi, to parents Losten and Leola Turner, who both preceded her in death. Dorothy was educated and certified in nursing where she pursued a career as an RN at Northwestern Hospital in Chicago, Illinois for 39 years. Her nursing skills and compassion for the sick equipped her to care for her father, Losten Turner, and a special aunt, Frances Brooks.
Dorothy married Robert Baskin of Winona, Mississippi on May, 6, 2000 in South Bend, Indiana. Dorothy was a long time member of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church where she served on the Usher Board (following in her father’s footsteps) and the Nurse’s Guild as a Chaplin, (fulfilling her passion for the sick) for many years. She was also a member of Sunday School Class #11, and a March Rally Fund Raiser Co-Captain of Group #1. Dorothy loved her church and was a very dedicated and faithful worker.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband Robert Baskin, Sr. of South Bend, Indiana. Dorothy gave birth to one daughter: Virginia Ann Lewis (who preceded her in death) through which were born grandsons Edwin Lewis III, and Timothy Lewis, grand-daughters: Virginia, Tiphony and Ebony Lewis; great-grandsons: Nathan Payne, Anthony Chambers, Goin Robinson and Carlos Robinson, great-granddaughters: Parise and Kennitha Lewis. Through her union with Robert Baskin Sr., Dorothy was blessed with sons: Robert (Frankie) Baskin Jr., James (Wendy) Smith and Glen Baskin, daughters: Louella Gary and Wannetta (Melvin) Reid, along with a special friend Lillie Gowen, and a host of great-great-grandchildren, relatives and friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents Losten and Leola Turner, her daughter Virginia Ann Lewis, a sister Lois Steen Belton, and a special aunt Frances Brooks.
Services for Dorothy M. Jones-Baskin will be held on Friday, May 17, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams Street, South Bend. Friends may call on the family for visitation for one hour prior to service at the church. Palmer Funeral Homes - West Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
