Welcome to the memorial page for

Eugene Campanale

August 24, 1928 ~ February 13, 2017 (age 88) 88 Years Old
Eugene “Gene” Campanale of Holy Cross Village, Notre Dame, passed away peacefully at Dujarie House at Holy Cross Village on Monday, February 13, 2017. He was born in Mishawaka to Rocco and Tina (Carabini) Campanale, who both preceded him in death. He was also preceded by his brother, Leonard in 1989; and his sister, Ann Gulyanics in 1997.

Gene is survived by his wife of 34 years, Rosalie (Glaub) Campanale of Notre Dame, IN; daughters, Beth Daugherty of Richmond, VA and Carol (Sam) Adcock of Vienna, VA; and sons, Anthony (Jennifer) of Oak Park, IL and Christopher of South Bend. He is also survived by two step-daughters, Lisa (Amy Heller) Shaffer of South Bend and Beth (John) Scott of Westfield, IN two step-sons, David Shaffer of Hot Springs Village, AR and Christopher (Sabine) Shaffer of Carmel, IN; as well as eleven grandchildren.

Gene graduated from Mishawaka High School in 1946 and the University of Notre Dame in 1950 with a Bachelor’s degree and in 1951 with a Master’s degree. After serving honorably in the United States Army from 1951-1953 during the Korean Conflict, he began his teaching career in Flint, MI and South Bend. Gene graduated from Indiana University, Bloomington with a Doctorate in Education in 1961. He became a school administrator in Marion, IN and then moved on to the college ranks, becoming Director of the Graduate Program at St. Mary’s College for one year before working at the University of Notre Dame as an associate in the Office of Educational Research and the Office of Teacher Preparation.

Gene was the first lay person to become chairman of the Education Department at St. Mary’s College. He taught at St. Mary’s for 26 years before retiring in 1996, but continued to be involved in the field of education in the Michiana area. He became interim Superintendent of Schools for the Bridgeman Public Schools in Bridgman, MI for an eight month period, and continued to teach part-time at both Indiana University, South Bend and St. Mary’s College.

Gene loved people and never met a stranger. He did not care what you did for a living, as long as you were honest. He always asked people their name and then addressed them by their name. Everyone was treated with respect, even Michigan and USC fans!

Gene loved people and served as a volunteer at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka and the Northeast Neighborhood Center. He was an active member of Sacred Heart Parish, Notre Dame. He especially enjoyed being president and coach of Clay JBA when his children were young.

Gene was proud of his Italian heritage and his Catholic faith. He was a devoted father, husband and grandfather, as well as a sincere believer in the adage “God, Family, Country and Notre Dame.” He followed Notre Dame sports religiously and suffered when Notre Dame, the Chicago Bears or the Chicago Cubs lost a sports contest. However, Gene especially enjoyed watching the Cubs win the World Series in 2016!

The family wishes to thank the staff at Dujarie House and the Center for Hospice Care for their excellent care of Gene.
