Fredric (Fred) Keith Bettner, 83 years old, passed away after an extended illness, at 6:38 pm on Monday, January 13, 2020 at the Center for Hospice Care, South Bend, IN. Fred was born on January 27, 1936 in New Castle, Indiana to Walter and Martha (Wood) Bettner. He was a 1954 graduate from Noblesville High School and a 1959 graduate from Butler University in Indianapolis with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.
Fred was a hard-working individual who spent his 36-year career helping others protect their financial future in the insurance industry – working for the Insurance Company of North America during his early career and settling into a 30-year role as an area field manager for Ohio Casualty Insurance Company. Additionally, Fred earned his professional CLU (Chartered Life Underwriter) and CHFC (Chartered Financial Consultant) designations. Fred did not sit still in retirement, as he spent the last two-plus decades of his life dedicated to Rotary International, where he served as Governor of District 6540, overseeing 55 clubs and more than 3,000 members in Northern Indiana. He also gave back to his church by serving as a co-chair of the Board of Deacons. Fred was passionate about fishing and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Fred is survived by his wife of 37 years, Beverly (Lowden) Bettner, brothers, James (Sandra) Bettner of Pittsboro, Indiana and David (Mary) Bettner of Glendale Arizona; adult children Tim (Sandy) Bettner, Jeanene (Renee Adam) Bettner, Amy Bettner, Chris (Gretchen Rucker) Bettner, and Terry Bettner. He is also survived by his first wife, Loanna (Miles) Rockstroh, 13 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Sunnyside Presbyterian Church, 115 South Frances Street, South Bend. Pastor Ken Locke will officiate. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services at Sunnyside Presbyterian.
Inurnment will take place at a later date at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend, IN.
