In the summer of 2009, I spent several weeks in St. Joe hospital receiving treatment for leukemia. I was there maybe a week, when a tall lanky gentleman, impeccably dressed, walked into my room, and said that he heard there was another Notre Dame man in the hospital. That gentleman was of course Jim. We hit it off, as I'm sure Jim did with almost everybody, and there weren't too many days, if any, that Jim wouldn't stop by and spend some time with me. I really looked forward to his visits, and his concern for me, (as well as his great stories!) certainly helped me keep a positive outlook during a difficult time. After I was released, we had a celebratory lunch at the Summit Club, together with Betty Ann. I continued to have lunch with Jim at Legends for several years. He was a wonderful man.

Betty Ann and Family,

I've known and respected Jim since he took me under his wing in my freshman year at ND in 1960. Wonderful human being. In my view, he was one who tried to use every minute to do something positive. Enormous loss to all who knew this other-centered man. Blessings in your grief. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

I was in SJMC in 2011 fighting for my life from a blood clot in my heart. Jim saw my mother in the chapel and asked if he could pray for me. He then visited me everyday during my 3 week stay in intensive care. God bless this man for becoming a friend, telling me things would be ok, and that hug he left me with everyday! You will never be forgotten Jim! May God bless you & your family always!

So sorry to hear of Jim's passing. A true gentleman who always had a kind word for me. He told me once of his fishing trips with Carl Yastrzemski and how Yaz would kid him about not being able to swim. On one of those trips, he had Yaz sign a ball to me. As a life-long Red Sox fan, it's something I'll always treasure.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Jim and Ted Robinson broadcast Notre Dame basketball games.....and always felt I understood the game a little bit better having done so.

My sincere sympathies to the family, now and in the days ahead.

Dear Betty Ann, Nancy, Brian, Kevin, Mike and the entire Gibbons clan,
Our deepest sympathies go out to each and every one of you as we know how badly you must be hurting at this time. However, take some solace in the life your husband and father lead , how much he accomplished and overcame during his time. I know personally what an inspiration he was to me during our health battles a few years ago when we would cross paths and cheer each other on knowing just exactly what the other was going through and how tough it really was to keep smiling every day. He was an old school battler that would not let some little virus like what we had get him down and that gave me more determination to keep fighting the good fight. He lead a wonderful life with a great family that he was incredibly proud ( Kevin maybe not so much) and will be with you everyday in your hearts and memories.

We are praying for you and Jim and will keep a positive thought for you all.
Much love
Tommy Smith and Family

I am honored to call Jim my friend. The world is better for Jim having lived in it. I am eternally grateful for the many prayers I know he prayed for me and my loved ones. His friendship was a joy and a huge blessing to me. He is a true servant of our Lord, and I know he is joyfully resting in God's infinite love now.
