Regina Coll and I worked with Joan in establishing the Gender Studies Program, and Joan was our chief promoter.  The dean refused to give us any money to start the Program because he was convinced we wouldn't get any students.  Joan was determined to get outside money and indeed she did!  We split the administrative duties, got a grant from the Lilly Foundation, and within a  year we were up and running. Joan never stopped fighting for the things she believed in.

Thank you. Joan, for being a model of excellence in your life and in your contributions to the well being of others. We knew each other only as acquaintances, but we were always glad for the chance to exchange ideas. Your presence among us is lasting; we will remember your selflessness on all occasions and your persistence in overcoming obstacles.

I remember Professor Joan as a welcoming presence for me when I joined the library faculty at the University of Notre Dame. Whenever we had a chance, we talked extensively about a myriad of topics including inclusion and making a way for others to have opportunities. Her legacy at Notre Dame will always be remembered by many. Eternal rest dear colleague.

I remember Joan for her interest in others.  She was a welcoming presence in our community of scholars when I first came to Notre Dame five years ago at a women's gathering.  Joan welcomed me and we chatted - lunches and dinners followed.  Having moved to the area alone and knowing no one, this act of kindness made a big impact on me, helping me to integrate into the ND community.  I appreciate and admire Joan for her kindness. Joan, you are truly an amazing person and have had a far reaching impact on others - thank you!  :-)

Joan was a fabulously spirited colleague and a real friend -- someone who was always willing to stand up for the principles that she believed in and which we share.  Her courage and determination along with her love of good conversation and good food were a real bright spot in the experience of so many of us.  Those fine qualities will stay with us.  We regret being in Europe on the day of the memorial service and send our best thoughts to all of Joan's community of friends and family.

Joan offered a model of strength and determination for us all. She overcame many unusual obstacles in her life to make a career of fighting for opportunities for others, and sought especially to expand women's career possibilities and improve family relations. She deserves to be remembered with honor, and to rest in peace.
