LaVoda Walker, 83 of South Bend passed away Friday, February 8, 2019 at Cardinal Nursing Home with family by her side. She was born on June 19, 1935 in Pryorsburg, KY to Thomas Schofield and Odell (Quisenberry) Schofield. She is preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Estella James and Helen Green, both of South Bend, IN.
In 1943, LaVoda, with her family, relocated to South Bend, IN. In the 1950’s she joined Pilgrim Baptist Church, under Pastor Charles G. Rowlett, and remained a faithful member under the leadership of Pastor H. Gregory Haygood. LaVoda served her church family as a Deaconess until her health declined.
In 1953, LaVoda graduated from Washington High School in South Bend, IN. She went on to earn a Practical Nursing License. She was employed at Memorial Hospital until shortly after her marriage. On August 24, 1969, LaVoda married Robert Walker, who preceded her in death in 1990. She is survived by a step-daughter, Donna Walker of Ellicott City, MD; a nephew, Michael James Sr, and a niece, Kathleen Green, both of South Bend, IN as well as a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
LaVoda enjoyed all different types of good food and music. She learned to play the organ and would entertain the family regularly. She was also very big on arts and crafts, sewing and knitting, and loved crossword puzzles as well as stimulating board games. Spending time with friends and family was always a priority; she was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, stepmother, aunt and a very loyal friend. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 15, 2019 at Palmer Funeral Home-West Chapel, 2702 Lincolnway West, South Bend, IN. Graveside services and burial will follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend, IN. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the services.
