Merle R. Borton, 72, passed away on Thursday, December 6, 2018 in South Bend, IN. Merle was born on December 13, 1945 in North Liberty, Indiana, to the late Lawrence and Helen Borton, and has remained a lifelong resident of this area. On November 20, 1965, in South Bend, he was united in marriage to the late Janice (Podemski) Borton and was married to her for 47 years, until the Lord called her home on October 4, 2013.
Merle worked as a butcher for many years as well as an employee for the St. Joseph County Highway Department and as the owner/operator of a lawn maintenance and snow removal service company. He enjoyed travel with his late wife, Notre Dame football games, bonfires, country music and most importantly, time spent with neighbors and friends.
Merle is survived by one daughter, Korin Epps; three sons, Wayne (Christy) Borton, Scott Borton, and Martin (Naomi) Borton; eleven grandchildren, Jordan, Jada, Brook, Carter, Alex, Jack, Mikey, Tiffany, Nathan, Paul and Vanessa; six brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Friends may visit with the family from 4:00-8:00pm, with rosary at 7:30pm, on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Rd., South Bend, IN. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am on Monday, December 17th at St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church, 2320 E. Jefferson Blvd, South Bend, IN, with additional visitation from 10:00-10:30am prior to Mass on Monday. Graveside services and burial will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Osceola, IN.
