Nicholas E. Smith, 33, residing in South Bend, passed away on Sunday, September 18, 2011 in his home. He was born in South Bend on December 11, 1977 to Stephen Smith and Cathy (Muia) Eader, who survive.
Nick has been a lifelong resident of the South Bend area, graduating from Penn High School in 1996 and then earning his bachelor's degree in Psychology from IUSB. He was currently working on earning his master's degree in Social Work, also from IUSB.
Nick worked with foster children and foster families at Dockside Services as a Case Manager for Foster Care Kids. Nick enjoyed listening to and playing music. He loved playing with his nephews and had an amazing affection for children. He dedicated himself to his work with foster kids and touched the lives of all with whom he came in contact. Nick had an uncanny ability to bring joy to others even in difficult times. He was very quick to offer a hug and a kind word to those in need. We love Nick dearly, and he will be greatly missed. We are very proud of the work he did with children, and his legacy will live on through the many lives that he touched.
In addition to his parents, Stephen Smith of South Bend and Cathy (Thomas) Eader of Granger, Nick is survived by one brother, Scott (Shawn) Smith of Madison, WI; one stepbrother, Thomas J. Eader of St. Croix, Virgin Islands; one stepsister, Erin Williamson of South Bend; one grandmother, Grace Smith of South Bend; and his girlfriend of several years, Wendy Balmer of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Lillian and Eugene Muia; and paternal grandparents, Chalmer and Wilma Smith.
Funeral services for Nick will be private. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2011 in the Palmer Funeral Home-Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend.
