Patricia L. Bryan

Patricia Louise Bryan, 71, residing in South Bend, passed away at 6:45 a.m. on Tuesday, September 14 at the Sanctuary at Holy Cross in South Bend. Patricia was born August 12, 1939 in South Bend to Charles A. and Margaret (Fortier) Bryan and has remained a lifelong resident of the area. 
 
Patricia graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1957 and attended Holy Cross School of Nursing until 1960. She also graduated in September of 1993 from the COVOH Foundation Partners in Policymaking course, funded by the Indiana Governor's Planning Council for people with disabilities.
 
Patricia was employed by the University of Notre Dame as Office Manager of the Admissions Department from 1960-1962, then by G. Thomas Rymers, D.O. from 1962-1964. She went back to work at the University of Notre Dame as Executive Secretary in the History Department from 1964-1965, when her employment was interrupted by health.
 
Very active in various organizations, Patricia was vice president and president of the Michiana Chapter of the National Association of Physically Handicapped as well as the Stroke Club of Michiana, having been a member since 1983. She was also involved with Really-Able People, a social group for people with disabilities, since 1978; Project Enable, an ADA education organization; Special Transportation Board; Disabilities Rights Commission; Education / Outreach Committee of the Human Rights Commission, concentrating on public education about ADA especially for small businesses; URC Task Force on Housing for the Disabled/Disadvantaged; TRANSPO ADA Advisory Task Force; and the National Spinal Cord Injury Association. Patricia was also a member of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church of Elkhart.
 
Politically, Patricia was involved since the mid 1980's with the St. Joe Valley NOW Board, South Bend Citizens Action Coalition Steering Committee, Pledge of Resistance Steering Committee and Women's International League for Peace and Freedom.
 
Patricia is survived by one sister, Judith A. Quashnock of Pittsburgh, PA; three brothers, Charles A. (Marian) Bryan of St. Petersburg, FL, Thomas E. (Jo Ellyn) Bryan of Denton, TX, and William J. (Cindi) Bryan of Groveland, FL; a cousin, George (Janet) Rumpf of South Bend; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one sister, Mary Ellen Bryan; and a dear friend, Ernie Dixon.
 
A memorial service for Patricia will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Palmer Funeral Home - River Park, 2528 Mishawaka Avenue, South Bend. Private burial will be held at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger. Friends may visit with the family from 9:00 -11:00 AM Saturday prior to services at the funeral home.
 
Memorial contributions on behalf of Patricia may be given to the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church of Elkhart, 1732 Garden Street, Elkhart, IN 46514.
