Sheridan Patrick McCabe

Sheridan Patrick McCabe, 87, died peacefully on Monday, November 6, in Arlington, Virginia.  A wake and hospitality visitation will be held on Monday, November 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN.  The funeral mass will be celebrated at the Church of Our Lady of Loretto on Tuesday, November 14 at 1 p.m. on Saint Mary’s College Campus. Immediately following a gravesite interment will take place at Cedar Grove Cemetery at the University of Notre Dame. 

Sheridan Patrick (Pat) was born on November 5, 1930 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  He was the son of the late Sheridan Patrick and Margaret (McDonald) McCabe.  He is preceded in death by his wife Mary Clare, his brothers John Donald McCabe and Robert McCabe, and his daughter, Margaret McCabe Kristl.

Pat attended Marquette High School in Milwaukee, WI for 3 years and graduated from St. Patrick’s in Kankakee, IL.  He attended Marquette University for two years before transferring to Saint Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, Maryland where he earned his Bachelors in Philosophy and a graduate degree in Theology.  He earned a Doctor of Philosophy in Psychology degree from The Catholic University of America in 1958.

Pat married Mary Clare Loftus on August 16, 1958, in Washington D.C.  They resided in Portland, Oregon from 1958 to 1968 and in South Bend, Indiana from 1968 until 2011, when they returned to Washington D.C.

Pat was steadfast in his faith, his commitment to supporting the full development of others, his love of learning, and, along with his beloved Mary Clare, was a model of hospitality. He had a distinguished career as a professor of psychology at the University of Portland and the University of Notre Dame, training students for doctoral degrees in counseling psychology; advancing the art of psychological assessment and testing; and serving as a founding member of the American Psychological Association’s division for Psychology of Religion and Spirituality. He was a long-time member of Little Flower parish in South Bend and an active participant proclaiming the Word and compassionately working with those returning to the Church. In more recent years, he was a valued and esteemed member of the Jefferson community in Arlington, Virginia; active in many social activities and committed to weekly volunteer service to those suffering from dementia. Pat’s quiet and gentle brilliance shines through in the loving spirit of his family to whom he was dedicated and to whom he leaves a legacy of love marked by his mirth, wisdom, patience, keen interest in politics and justice, love of a well-played game of cribbage, enjoyment of classical music, fine food and finer company.

He is survived by his daughters: Elizabeth McCabe, Catherine (David) McCabe Grossman, RoseAnne (Gary) McCabe Halperin, and Patricia (Miguel) McCabe Estrada, and his son-in-law Ken Kristl. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Madelyn Lisa, Isaac Sean, Hannah Rose, Joseph Padraig, and Margaret Clare (Megan), and several dear nieces and nephews.
