Vernon M. Daly, Sr., 94, resident of Mishawaka, passed away on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 at Valley View Healthcare Center in Elkhart, IN. Vernon was born on August 24, 1923 in La Porte, IN to Vernon M. and Ethel I. (Reed) Daly, both of whom preceded him in death.
On February 21, 1942 in South Bend, Vernon married his high school sweetheart, the former Florence M. Evans, who survives. In addition to his loving wife of 76 years, Vernon is survived by daughter, Sandra (David) Ertel of Bear Lake, MI; son, Vernon M. Daly, Jr., of Mishawaka, IN; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Alberta Barone of South Bend. In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his sisters, Patsy Eakins and Carole Daly, as well as his brothers, Robert Daly and Jack Daly.
Vernon was employed as an automatic coin machine repairman at Evans Sales and Services for 29 years, and then as a dispatcher and warehouse foreman for Blarney Castle Oil Company for 20 years, retiring in 1990. Vernon proudly served his country in the United States Army during WW II, and immediately following, served an additional six years as Master Sergeant in the Reserves. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for 59 years. He loved golfing, fishing, woodworking, and watching all sports. In high school, Vernon enjoyed the marching band and orchestra, and his biggest thrill was playing the drums through the tunnel at Notre Dame stadium during a South Bend/Mishawaka football game.
Funeral services for Vernon will be held at 11:00am on Monday, June 18, 2018 at Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN. Chaplain John Schrock of Harbor Light Hospice will officiate. The family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00pm on Sunday, June 17th at the funeral home. Inurnment will take place at a later date at St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park in Granger, IN.
