Virgil R. "V.R." Hesseling

Virgil R. "V.R." Hesseling, 80, of South Bend, IN passed away on August 12, 2017 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.  V.R. was born on December 27, 1936 in Delphos, OH to the late Charles and Philomena (Rahrig) Hesseling.  He has resided in South Bend for over 50 years and enjoyed 45 years of marriage to Carol (Plencner) Hesseling until her death on December 15, 2009.

V.R. is survived by his daughter, Judy (Don) Carpenter of Greenwood, IN; his son Ken Hesseling of Fishers, IN; three grandchildren, Nathan, Nicholas, and Justin Carpenter and many nieces and nephews.   He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Gilbert, Leo and Donald Hesseling.

V.R. was a Civil War buff, loved collecting antiques and coins and enjoyed U.S. Military history.  He was able to travel the world while serving in the United State Air Force and even had the pleasure of meeting Pope John XXIII.  V.R. was also an avid fan of the Notre Dame Women's Basketball team and long time season ticket holder. 

A Catholic Prayer Service will be held on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend.  Rev. Michael Belinsky will officiate.  Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.  A private burial will take place at Southlawn Cemetery.
