Walter H. Baell

Walter Hosea Baell, 77, of South Bend, IN, passed away on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Caring Junction in Mishawaka, IN. Walter was born in Dothan, AL on July 16, 1940 to Cleland and Eura B. (Watford) Baell. On April 12, 1975 in Los Angeles, CA, he married his wife of 42 years, Elaine (Jewett) Baell, who survives. Walter worked in the automotive industry, working for Rolls Royce Motors for 18 years and later retiring from AM General in 2013. He served honorably for 8 years in the United States Air Force. After his Military service, he went to Vietnam as a civilian representative for Air Research.

Walter is survived by his wife Elaine; his mother Eura Baell of Florida; daughters, Michelle (Greg) Fuller of Avilla, IN and Crystal (Paul) Deavers of DeMotte, IN; grandson Brett Alvarez; three sisters, Lynda Ash of Robertsdale, AL, Pat Newman of Atlanta, GA, and Lauri (Tom) Brennan of Sarasota, FL; and brother David (Sandra) Baell of Athens, GA. He was preceded in death by his father, Cleland.

Walter and Elaine loved to travel, and between professional and personal trips have visited all 50 states and 35 countries. He was a Master Gardener and an established photographer with a vast collection of photos. He loved family get-togethers and was always eager to challenge his family to competitive games. He was a loving son, brother, husband, father and grandfather. Always eager to help, he was the “go-to guy” for friends and family, and was a great listener.

He fought long and hard in his battle with Leukemia and Alzheimer’s, never complaining. He will be greatly missed.

Memorial services for Walter will be at 11:30 AM on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Palmer Funeral Home – Guisinger Chapel. Friends may visit with the family from 10 – 11:30 AM before the service at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in honor of Walter H. Baell may be made to Pet Refuge, Inc., 4626 S.
