Andrew Betts Obituary

Andrew MacKay Betts, 82, of Granger, IN, passed away on Friday, September 24, 2021.

Andrew was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, the third son of the late Wallace Havelock and Mary Drysdale Betts of Wallace, N.S. He graduated from Dalhousie University, Halifax, with a B.A. and B.Ed. He immigrated to the United States in 1965 to marry Sarah Smith of Beloit, WI, and Middletown, OH, who survives. He remained a Canadian citizen. He is also survived by daughter, Ann C. (Brian) Cooper; son, Colin MacKay (Jill) Betts; five grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews and their children.

Andrew was an active member and elder of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church of South Bend, IN. He was active in the local community in theater, singing, storytelling, badminton, volleyball, Boy Scouts, teaching cooking classes, and Scottish games and festivals. He was a longstanding member of the Michiana Male Chorus; founder and director of the Osceola Community Player’s Children’s Theatre Workshop; and founder and president of the Michiana Scottish Society. Andrew loved being involved in local groups that supported the performing arts. One of his memorable roles was as the Emperor in Theatre Lady’s production of The Emperor’s New Clothes. Performing in dramatic ways, Andrew drew on the audiences’ reactions in his performances.
