Angela E. Russo, 77, of South Bend, IN, passed away on December 31, 2025. Born on November 18, 1948, in Evanston, IL, she was a devoted mother and a trailblazing attorney who dedicated her life to the service of others.
Angela was an intelligent and vivacious woman from a young age. She received a scholarship to many schools and programs, including Saint Mary’s Academy, Rutgers University, Indiana University, and Notre Dame Law School. Throughout her 35-year law career, Angela was known as a tireless advocate for families and justice. Whether she was in a courtroom or providing pro bono services to those in need, she led with integrity, wit, and a sharp legal mind. Colleagues often remarked on her ability to lead in the courtroom with confidence and also, with grace.
While her professional accomplishments were many, Angela’s greatest pride was her family. She balanced the demands of her practice with an unwavering presence in her children’s lives, teaching them the value of hard work, kindness, and standing up for what is right. Her children remember her most for her infectious laugh, generosity and for her unwavering love and compassion.
She is survived by her children, Victor N. Russo (Amanda Russo), Gina E. Verteramo (Rocky Verteramo), Alissa M. Russo, and Bridget E. Russo (Brandon Hodgson); her grandchildren, Gianna and Rocco Verteramo, her siblings, Gerald Wetzel and Mary Kay Shwartz, along with many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Katherine Wetzel (Wahl), as well as two of her siblings, George Wetzel and Barbara Culliton.
The family would like to thank the staff at Elkhart Meadows for their loving care of Angela during a challenging time in her life, and to Gerald and Glenelle Wetzel for their support and care throughout, we love and thank you.
A celebration of Angela’s life will be held at a later date. All who knew her are welcome to attend and share memories.
