Audrey Slingsby Obituary

Audrey A. Slingsby entered her heavenly home on January 24, 2021, in the comfort of her daughter and son-in-law’s home.

Audrey, the daughter of Herman G. Grams and Alma (Dehn) was born on December 12, 1936 at the family farm near Westbrook, MN. She attended a one room country elementary school, graduated from high school in 1954 and attended a business college in Minneapolis, MN.

Audrey had many fond memories of growing up on the family dairy farm, participating in her church, school and 4-H activities. Her pastime of watching airplanes fly over the farm led to her interest in travel. She started her career at the Burlington Railroad in Chicago, IL, then on to American Airlines. She was a manager at Edgerton’s Travel in Valparaiso before starting her own travel agency, Travel Inc. Audrey had a passion for history, geography and studying maps of the world. This knowledge helped her plan great itineraries for clients as well as her own travels to all parts of the world.

On February 16, 1957, at her country church near Westbrook, MN, she married Jack W. Slingsby. Their first home was in Highland, IN before moving to their home designed by Audrey in Valparaiso, IN. In 2016, she moved to her present home in South Bend, IN. Her many hobbies included gardening, decorating, reading, golfing, antiquing, quilting, puzzles, flower arranging, playing games and playing her guitar.

Left to celebrate her remarkable life are her children, Mark Slingsby of Valparaiso, IN and Susan (Bruce) Burnett of South Bend, IN; her sisters, Marlys Jorgenson and Caryol Einertson; nieces Marilyn Jorgenson and Nancy Clark; nephews Larry Jorgenson and Bob Einertson; granddaughter Brook (Brock) Muhlenkamp and great grandchildren: Kelsey, Bailey, Riley and Patrick; and Audrey’s cousins, Mary Ann Bosler, Myron Grams and Carolyn Lebsock.

Preceding Audrey in death are her husband Jack; her parents; brother-in-laws Lyle Jorgenson and Marvin Einertson; and niece Brenda Kalkbrenner.

Audrey answered her Lord’s call with a puzzle unfinished and one more hosta plant to be planted in her garden.  Her family is grateful for the compassionate care given to her by all of the staff at Dune’s Hospice and her special caregiver, Tracy.

A Christian education for Mark and Susan was very important to Jack and Audrey. Therefore, memorial donations may be made in Audrey’s honor to Immanuel Lutheran School, 1700 Monticello Park Dr #1, Valparaiso, IN 46383 or Resurrection Lutheran Academy, 6840 Nimtz Pkwy, South Bend, IN 46628.

Per the family’s wishes, no public services are currently scheduled. A private service will take place at a later date in Valparaiso, IN. Palmer Funeral Homes – West Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. Online expressions of sympathy may be left at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
