Barbara Wirt Obituary

It is with both sadness and a sense of peace that we announce the passing of Barbara Mary Gordon Wirt, who entered eternal rest on March 29, 2026, reunited with her Heavenly Father and her beloved husband. Born in 1938 to the late Purdue and Florence Gordon, Barbara lived a life defined by faith, compassion, and service.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Michael Wirt, Sr.; her siblings, Phyllis Woolbright and John Gordon; and her lifelong friend of more than 75 years, Dixie.

Barbara is survived by her children, Michael II (Rhonda), Thomas (Jennifer), Timothy (Lucinda), Kerry (Tina), and Wendy Wirt; along with 13 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter.

Known to many as a devoted mother, grandmother, nurse, and lay pastor, Barbara’s life was a reflection of her deep commitment to caring for others. She served as an OB and pediatric nurse for over 40 years, offering not only medical expertise but also kindness, patience, and reassurance to countless families. She guided new mothers through the joys and uncertainties of parenthood and, on occasion, even assisted in delivering babies when a doctor could not arrive in time.

Later in life, Barbara answered a call to ministry, serving as a lay pastor for more than two decades. She led her own church in Niles and faithfully filled in wherever she was needed. Through both her nursing and pastoral work, she touched lives in meaningful and lasting ways - presiding over weddings, including her son’s, and even officiating the funeral of a young man she had once helped bring into the world.

A woman of deep and abiding faith, Barbara remained closely connected to her church and religious community throughout her life. She cherished her family above all, and her love and devotion were felt daily by those closest to her. She also found great joy in music, especially hymns and marching bands, which were a constant source of comfort and happiness.

In her final days, Barbara spoke often of her longing to be reunited with her husband and dear friend, Dixie—an enduring reflection of the love she carried throughout her life.

Barbara Mary Wirt’s life stands as a testament to faith, service, and love. She leaves behind a legacy of compassion and devotion that will be cherished by all who knew her.
