Bernard Pickett Obituary

Bernard “Bernie” Earl Pickett Sr., 83, passed away unexpectedly on March 6, 2026, at St. Joseph Hospital in Mishawaka.

Born on June 21, 1942, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Bernie was the son of Earl and Mildred Pickett. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters Barbara Brohman, Ruth Jewett, and Marilyn Whitlow; and his brother Roger Pickett.

Bernie is survived by his devoted wife of 48 years, Vira (Cindy) Pickett; his sister, Shirley Hammonds; and his three children—Robyn L. Danielson (Art), Mellissa S. Katzenmeyer (Frank), and Bernard E. Pickett Jr. (Gabrielle). He is also lovingly remembered by his seven grandchildren: Cristina, Justin (Bianca), Samantha (Nicholas), Brennen (Emily), Ian, Mitchell (Amanda), and JoAnn (John); as well as his thirteen great-grandchildren, who brought him endless joy.

A hardworking and dedicated man, Bernie operated a service station (Ironwood Services Station) in South Bend for 37 years. He later worked for Gurley Leep before retiring, though retirement didn’t keep him idle—he continued working part time at Campbell Ford, enjoying the friendships and routine it brought.

Bernie was an active and proud member of the Clay Township Lions Club for more than 60 years, and he was also involved with the American Kennel Club. He was an avid sports fan whose loyalty to Notre Dame Football and Notre Dame Basketball never wavered.

In accordance with Bernie’s wishes, no memorial service will be held. Those who wish to honor his memory may make contributions to the American Cancer Society, PO Box 6704, Hagerstown MD 21741
