Betty Jean Cox, 92, went to her heavenly home to see Jesus on Saturday, September 9, 2023. She died peacefully with family members at her side. She has been reunited with her husband, Dale, who was the love of her life for 68 years. Betty was born on June 29, 1931 in Plymouth, IN to the late Wallace Franklin and Virgie Adine (Snyder) Peregrine. On March 18, 1951 in Plymouth, during spring break in Dale’s sophomore year at Purdue, Betty and Dale E. Cox were united in marriage. From there on, it was a life filled with many adventures and lots of wonderful memories.
Betty is survived by her five children, Sue (Dave) Goebel of Plymouth, Steve (Karen) Cox of Plymouth, Phil (Rena) Cox of Lakeville, Pat (Sue) Cox of Plymouth, and Chris (Michelle) Cox of Bremen; nine grandchildren, Rona Cox, Jason (Amanda) Cox, Nicole (Tony) Carlo, Ryan Cox, Jeremy (Nicole) Cox, Amanda (Justin) Christy, Kyle (Erin) Cox, Darin (Lindsay) Cox and Sean (Sarah) Cox; twenty-one great grandchildren, J.T., Isaiah, Haylie, Rilye, Trynitie, Addison, Alyssia, Ashlynn, Andrew, Lexi, Kaelyn, Quentin, Clark, Klay, Chloey, Emmerson, Lucca, Makenna, Trey, Grant, and Kendall; sister, Margaret Cramer; brother, Wally Peregrine; and sister-in-law, Marianne Peregrine. Betty was preceded in death by her sister, Juanita Scarborough; infant sister, Sally Peregrine; and brother, Dave Peregrine.
Betty was a stay-at-home mom for fifteen years until the youngest started school. She was the treasurer at LaVille High School for twenty-three years before retiring in 1991. Athletics was a big part of her life. With all five of her children participating in sports, she attended many basketball, baseball, and football games. It was a busy and fun time.
Betty loved music. She and her sister, Fuzz, took guitar lessons at a young age. Every year at the Peregrine reunion her mom dressed them alike and they played “Whispering Hope” for entertainment. She began taking piano lessons at the age of twelve. Her main love was playing for the Sunday services at church.
Family was a big part of her life. For several years she and Dale went “Up North” to Minong, Wisconsin for a family fishing vacation. Different family members would make the trek up north for fishing, cards, and cleaning lots of fish for future fish fries on Sunday evenings. Sunday night gatherings included kids, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all their friends. There was the annual “Cox Camping” to various state parks in Southern Indiana during the month of October. Camping at Turkey Run and attending the Covered Bridge Festival was always a special treat. There were special family events every Thanksgiving and Christimas. It was indeed a Wonderful Life.
