Betty Truex Obituary

Betty Jean Truex, 95, of Mishawaka, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at the Caring Cottage on Martin Lane in South Bend.

Betty was born October 17, 1925 in St. Joseph County, Indiana, to the late Louis and Matilda E. (Berger) VonGruenigen.

On February 3, 1945, she married DeVon E. Truex in Wakarusa where they farmed, grew huge gardens, and worked many places in town. Betty was a homemaker, who began her work career at Ball Band, Mishawaka, and concluded her career at Green Croft in Goshen, after many years working in their Catering Department. In 2010, they moved to Mishawaka to live closer to their daughter. DeVon preceded her in death on July 21, 2016. They were married 71 years.

She was a kind, gentle, and hardworking lady who thought the world of her family and spoiled them whenever she got the chance. She led a healthy lifestyle which taught us so many valuable lessons in living out our lives and what was most important to have a healthy and happy future.

She was a member of the Eastern Star in Bremen, as well as Zion United Evangelical Church of Christ in Madison Twp., Wakarusa.

Surviving is her daughter, Becky (Larry) Penn of Mishawaka; and three grandchildren, Wendy (Jason) Joris of Indianapolis, Brian (Angie) Penn of Granger, and Don (Carolyn) Penn of Indianapolis. Also surviving are her six great-grandchildren: Raegan and Taylor Joris; Colin and Mia Penn; and Owen and Parker Penn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sisters, Eileen Correll and Marilyn Gildner, and one brother, Warren Von Gruenigen.

According to Betty's wishes, her body has been donated to the Anatomical School of Medicine, University of Michigan, for further study, after which cremation will take place. Private family services will be at a later date at Bremen Cemetery.

Many thanks are extended to Betty's “second family” at the Caring Cottage on Martin Lane, South Bend for their loving and wonderful care of mother and grandma.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Comfort 1 Hospice, 129 S. Dixie Way, South Bend, IN 46637.
