Betty J. (Schaefer) Yarp

Betty J. (Schaefer) Yarp, 96, of South Bend, passed away on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at Trailpoint Village in South Bend.

Betty was born on February 19, 1929, in Buchanan, Michigan, to the late Emil and Stella (Worthington) Schaefer. She later made her home along the St. Joseph River in Mishawaka, where she lived for more than 40 years and created countless memories with family and friends.

Betty was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother to eight. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter, Sue Ann.

A hardworking woman, Betty spent 28 years employed at Kmart, retiring as a manager in food services. Even after retirement, she wasn’t ready to slow down and went on to work at Subway for several more years.

Betty was spunky, independent, and always on the go. She loved all things Elvis, being in the sun, indulging in sweets, playing cards and bingo, working on puzzles, feeding the ducks and squirrels, watching Wheel of Fortune and Western movies, and, of course, sneaking off to the casino. She was also a wonderful cook, and her kitchen was the heart of many cherished family gatherings. Fond memories include fish fry nights at the river house, her homemade mac and cheese, potato soup, chili dinners, her famous German chocolate cake, homemade salami, and the treasured kieflies at Christmas.

Betty will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.

In keeping with her wishes, no services will be held.
