Bonnie Werntz Obituary

Bonnie B. Werntz, 82, of South Bend, Indiana, a pioneer of women’s equality, passed away peacefully at her home on February 20, 2024, surrounded by her family, dear friend Patrick, and beloved cat Bruce.

Born on March 28, 1941, to the late Gilbert and Rosalie (Reed) Bailey, in Pine Grove Mills, PA, she spent her formative years with her siblings, Gin (D), Shirley, Gil, Dan, and Michael (D). She had a passion for justice and community and was a proud graduate of Indiana State University of South Bend, IN. Her commitment to community was evident in her 23 ½ years proudly serving as a South Bend Police Officer, and as the city’s first female lieutenant, retiring in 1997.

Bonnie’s life was a collection of extraordinary chapters that she meticulously detailed through photographs along the way. Her passion for photography became the joy of her retirement alongside her companion, Earl. An avid traveler, Bonnie's adventures took her on several visits to Germany and exploring the United States in her RV.

When she wasn’t on the road, you could find her slaving away in the kitchen all day just to stock her family up with their fan-favorite meals of oxtail soup, ground meat over rice, and Gram sandwiches. She always said, “Presentation is everything” and insisted that the only way to eat melon - was to ball it.

Bonnie is lovingly remembered by her children, Donna Gregory of South Bend, IN, and Rodney Brogan (Victoria) of Las Vegas, NV. Bonnie’s legacy and Christmas cookie recipe continue through her cherished grandchildren, Chad Gregory (Laura), Lauren Callender (Brian), and Katelyn Gregory, as well as her seven great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy. She now joins her husband, Robert Werntz, late companion Earl Sheridan, and treasured cat Roscoe at eternal rest.

Bonnie will be remembered as a devoted Gram, a passionate advocate for women, and a force to be reckoned with. Her generous heart, wit, and food will be missed by all.

A memorial visitation will be held 11 am- 2 pm Monday, February 26, 2024, at Palmer Funeral Home Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
