Charles E. “Bud” Holmes, Jr., 91, of South Bend passed away at 4:45 a.m. Thursday, July 15th. at Wellbrooke of South Bend. Bud was born July 15, 1930 in South Bend to the late Margaret (Kowatch) and Charles E. Holmes and was a lifetime area resident. On September 27, 1952 in South Bend he married Thelma I. Fetterer who preceded him in death on November 29, 2016. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Wilfert. He is survived by his sons, Charles E. Holmes III (Sheila) and Patrick S. Holmes both of South Bend; two granddaughters, Pauline Beal (Brian) of South Bend and Jennifer King (Justin) of Corpus Christi, TX; three great-grandchildren, Christian Beal and Jonathan and Jay King; a sister, Judy Spromberg (Larry) of South Bend; and a brother, John Holmes (Joyce) of South Bend.
Bud was a 1948 graduate of South Bend Catholic high school. He served in the United States Navy (1948-1952) and was a Korean War veteran. After discharge Bud began a career working for the United States Postal Service retiring from the South Bend Post Office in 1985. Post retirement Bud concentrated on family life. He had a lifetime love of sports and was part of an all-star high school baseball team that played an exhibition game against the South Bend Blue Socks.
There will be no service or visitation. A graveside gathering of family and friends will precede the burial at noon, July 17th. Burial will take place next to Thelma in Highland Cemetery.
